Position Summary
The Second Assistant helps direct and participate in the overall maintenance and conditioning of the golf course. This role has an overall responsibility of collaborating with the leadership team and supporting the Golf Course Superintendent and Assistant Golf Course Superintendent in overseeing the completion of daily maintenance tasks in the highest level of quality possible and ensuring that conditions exceed the minimum requirements. The Second Assistant will provide guidance to the Golf Maintenance Attendants and ensure a healthy and safe environment and workplace for all.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Assist with the daily department operation, including start of shift briefings, work assignments and end of shift briefings.
- Report golf course conditions and work assignment updates to leadership
- Ensure that employment work standards under the ESA are being met by associates regarding job procedures and machinery use.
- Serve as an individual contributor and department role model by performing technical or functional job duties such as equipment operation, chemical and fertilizer applications, irrigation system maintenance, etc.
- Application of granular and liquid fertility products to all areas of the golf course
- Application of various chemicals, such as pesticides, soil stimulants and wetting agent products to address plant pathology and soil health
- Perform various agronomic operations such as sand topdressing, verti-cutting, aerification, venting and brushing
- Operation of various golf maintenance equipment for mowing tees, greens, fairways, rough
- Accountable for using a variety of hand tools to dig and repair holes on the course
- Safe equipment operation including such heavy equipment as wheel loaders, tracked skid steers, 40hp – 75hp tractors, heavy duty utility vehicles and light utility vehicles and all applicable mowing equipment
- Work with the leadership team to ensure that associates are trained and clearly understand their job roles, responsibilities and performance expectations
- Provide constructive feedback to associates to help them develop their skills
- Ensure that department goals are communicated, understood, and met by associates
- Coach and counsel associates on work related concerns and issues to ensure satisfaction and productivity
- Issue and distribute uniforms and ensure associates are following grooming standards
- Compliance with all safety regulations of assigned tasks, and ensure a clean and safe working environment with active participation in the health and safety program
- Adhere to all environmental policies and programs as required
- Other duties as assigned
·Qualifications
• Post-secondary diploma or degree in Turf Management
• Knowledge of turf pathology, identification and proactive measures an asset
• 3-5 years of golf course experience
• Valid Ontario Pesticide License
• Experience leading a team in a golf course setting
• Comprehensive knowledge and experience with tools, methods and materials used in ground construction, maintenance, landscaping and building maintenance
• Knowledge of agronomy, turf grass science and the rules of golf
• Working knowledge of electricity and hydraulics related to an irrigation system including automatic valves and controllers and various types of pumps and systems an asset
• Valid Ontario driver’s license
• Strong verbal and written communication skills
• Detail-oriented and works with a high degree of accuracy
• Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment
• Must be extremely responsible with integrity and ability to maintain confidentiality and discretion
• Must be able to work flexible hours including evenings, weekends and holidays
• Required to move, lift, carry, pull and place objects weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance
• Stand, sit or walk for an extended period of time or for an entire shift
